A medical exemption under California Vehicle Code §26708(b)(3) is a physician-certified document that allows you to have darker window tint than the standard 70% VLT front limit. This is the only legal way to have meaningful aftermarket tint on front side windows in California.
California's 70% VLT requirement is the strictest in the United States — factory glass barely qualifies at 70-75% VLT. Any aftermarket tint on front windows will almost certainly violate CVC §26708 without an exemption. Back side windows and rear windows can be any darkness on all vehicle types.
